THE MANY FACES OF
Computacenter at 40
October this year marks 40 years since Philip Hulme and Peter Ogden founded Computacenter.
Since then we’ve grown from a single store in Wiltshire, England, to a multi-national company with offices across the world and customers in over 70 countries.
Our business is about technology, but first of all it’s about people; all 17,000 of us – and we would not be where we are today without the commitment, creativity and loyalty of our people.
To honour this occasion, we are sharing a collection of thoughts, feelings, memories and stories from a selection of our fantastic people.
Group Delivery Take-On Manager, Spain
I’ve been working at Computacenter over the last 10 years and have, during this time, fulfilled several roles as Senior Operations Manager, Head of Business Take On for Service Desk in Barcelona, National Security Officer for Spain, etc. The diversity of the work that I do ensures that no day is like any other and allows me to contribute with my experience and skills to a variety of projects.
Each project presents specific challenges in a constant changing and always evolving business. I love feeling a sense of accomplishment when I am up against a deadline and must get it right first time! It’s great when, working as a team, it turns out better than we could have imagined!
In Computacenter there is a genuine spirit of cooperation and shared goals around always doing things well, helping the customer and looking after the business that is difficult to find in other companies.
I do feel proud of working in a company that promotes positive organizational culture as it is key to feeling motivated and engaged at work. This truly creates a family environment where everybody is there for each other!
Service Director, Germany
2021, what a perfect year – Computacenter and I both turn 40 in the same year!
I have spent more than half my life here, what can I say? I love this company.
I was just a teenager when I started and we grew up together. Looking back, it's great to see all that has happened. I've met a lot of great people, made real friends and found the man of my life. The company has really grown since I started, but it's still the people who make this company what it is. I am proud to be part of GTS and the CC family.
Transition & Take on Specialist Associate, Germany
Hello everyone, my name’s Sylvie Knuth. I’ve been with Computacenter since 2015, starting with an Apprenticeship which I finished in 2018. Since July this year I’m in the role of a Transition & Take on Specialist at Group Technology Sourcing and together with my team colleagues we work as a team of experts on large, complex product tenders and are experienced in operationalizing processes designed before it is handed over to the GTS operational teams.
From day one it felt like home to me. Working at Computacenter has allowed me to develop so much personally that I have become much more self-confident and have also learned about my own value. Good work is appreciated so much at Computacenter. That is really something unique.
The best thing about working for Computacenter is that some colleagues have become more than just colleagues over the years, they have become my best friends. I am honoured to be working at a very well-respected international company with an incredible people culture.
For me, Computacenter is just really about the people and I’m very grateful to work at here.
Client Director, UK
I love our company and I feel privileged that I can say that. My belief started 23 years ago when I joined a competitor called Lantec. I was one of only a few account managers in their London, Canary Wharf office and joined at a time when the “mighty Computacenter” had won a key client. My colleagues revered Computacenter, if “CC were in a bid chances are they’d win it”. After a few months I set my goal to join Computacenter and within a year an opportunity presented itself when my boss joined in early 1999. My first interview was June 1999 and at the end I was asked if I had any questions. I said yes – can I see the sales floor. I’d heard rumours of it being like a trade floor and I was eagerly escorted to the 5th Floor of Friars House, opposite the main office in Blackfriars Road. That’s when the energy of Computacenter first hit me. I’ll never forget that moment – nowhere have I felt anything like it. Everyone feels it at our Kick Offs but it’s everywhere, in all of us. It’s part of our DNA and that’s what makes Computacenter so special and admired by so many including our customers, vendors and partners. Happy 40th Birthday Computacenter – I can’t tell you how proud I am to say that!
Head OF Technical Resource Group, Belgium
My name is David Jones (Dave) and I am a proud Welshman from Llanelli with quite a strong accent, despite my not living in Wales since I was 18. In a former life I worked in the UK for the Royal Air Force and the Ministry of Defence. I have worked for CC for nearly 20 years and have always been based in Belgium. I am living here because my wife is Belgian and in fact, so am I since last year. I actually hold dual nationality and speak enough Flemish to get by.
I started my career with CC back in 2002 at the SWIFT Helpdesk. At Swift, I held various roles finishing off as the Service Manager. In 2015, I moved into my current role as Head of TRG Belgium.
Why have I stayed with CC for this long? For me the answer is simple and it may sound like a cliché, but I thoroughly enjoy working for a great company that genuinely cares about their people.
I have worked with and continue to work with fantastic like-minded people in my various roles over the years and have been provided with all the support, coaching and job opportunities required by me in reaching my career goals. The professionalism of the business, the ethics, also coupled with People Matter and Winning Together values have been so important to me over the years. For me personally it has also been very inspiring to meet colleagues from all over the world and I am pleased to have an additional connection with the UK, through CC.
I think this following quote sums up my view on working for CC ‘I am too busy working on my own grass to notice if yours is greener.
Group Employer Branding Manager, Germany
What do I like most about Computacenter? That’s an easy one. The people and the possibilities. If you raise your hand and know where you want to go, and you are willing to learn in the process, you will find plenty of open doors at Computacenter. I started as a local communications specialist and a few years later, I found my dream job in our global Talent Acquisition team. I was given the opportunity to build an entirely new global function and lead a team in part-time. The flexibility, freedom and trust that I have experienced when facing this new challenge was amazing: it’s not about where and when you work, it’s about your skills and the results.
What thrills me about my job is immersing myself into diverse and exciting projects, the possibility to do things for the first time, find creative solutions and, well, it's just inspiring to work with so many talented people from different countries. Of course, there are also challenging times when things don’t go as planned or when work and life commitments collide. But there is one thing you can count on: you are never alone at Computacenter. There is just something about the ‘CCness’ of our people. We are all unique, but united in our values. The supportiveness and the sense of belonging: for me, that’s the magic! And I think that has not changed within 40 years of CC.
Delivery Excellence Manager S&D, HUNGARY
Hello Everyone, my name is Adam Pfliegel and today I am working as Delivery Excellence manager for our Source and Deploy department. For me, Computacenter is a great company because it allows me and empowers me to do the work that I love doing. In other words, this is the first company in my life which allowed me to open my wings and fly on topics and activities that I like doing with passion and CC is supporting me on my decisions. I feel empowered, responsible and motivated to work every day, however of course I also sometimes have difficult and stressful days when I feel that need to multiple myself, but I like to solve challenges with my team in a creative way , find solutions together and make extremely difficult projects successful at the end. It is really great to be part of a collaborative and supportive team.
